Cardboard and Paper Prices Rising.
A Call for Stronger Board Grade Cardboard
In recent months, we have witnessed a significant increase in rising cardboard and paper prices globally. This surge is attributed to a combination of factors. These include increased demand, supply chain disruptions, and rising costs of raw materials. As businesses and consumers alike feel the pinch, it’s essential to understand the reasons behind these price hikes. In this article we will explore the importance of opting for strong board grade cardboard in these challenging times.
The Price Surge: Causes and Implications
- Increased Demand: The rise in e-commerce and home deliveries, especially post-pandemic, has significantly boosted the demand for packaging materials. More goods being shipped directly to consumers mean more cardboard boxes are needed.
- Supply Chain Disruptions: The global supply chain has been under strain due to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and transportation bottlenecks. These disruptions have impacted the availability and cost of raw materials necessary for paper and cardboard production.
- Rising Raw Material Costs: The cost of pulp, the primary raw material for paper and cardboard, has increased due to various factors including environmental regulations and limited supply. Additionally, energy costs have surged, further driving up production expenses.
- Implications of Rising Costs: Due to increased paper costs since April of this year, manufacturers have had no option but to increase corrugated prices from 7-10% in some cases.
The Importance of Strong Board Grade Cardboard
- Durability and Reusability: Strong board grade cardboard is known for its durability and capacity to withstand the rigors of transportation. This means boxes are less likely to get damaged during shipping, ensuring that products arrive safely. Furthermore, their robustness makes them reusable, reducing the need for frequent replacements and thus saving money in the long run.
- Cost-Effectiveness Over Time: While the initial cost of high-quality cardboard may be higher, the long-term savings are significant. Strong board grade cardboard’s reusability reduces the need for purchasing new boxes frequently. This not only cuts costs but also contributes to sustainability efforts by minimizing waste.
- Enhanced Protection: Higher grade cardboard provides better protection for goods, reducing the likelihood of damage and returns. This is particularly important for businesses dealing with fragile or high-value items, where the cost of product damage far outweighs the investment in quality packaging.
The Pitfalls of Lower Board Grade Cardboard
- Increased Costs for Substandard Quality: With the price hikes affecting all grades of cardboard, the cost difference between lower and higher grades is narrowing. Businesses may find themselves paying nearly the same price for lower quality materials that do not offer the same benefits in terms of durability and reusability.
- Higher Replacement Rates: Lower grade cardboard is more prone to damage, necessitating more frequent replacements. This not only increases direct costs but also adds to logistical challenges and environmental impact due to higher waste generation.
- Risk of Product Damage: The use of substandard cardboard increases the risk of product damage during transit, leading to higher return rates, customer dissatisfaction, and potential loss of business. The initial savings from cheaper cardboard can quickly evaporate in the face of these indirect costs.
What’s our take?
The recent increase in cardboard and paper prices in Europe underscores the importance of choosing strong board grade cardboard. While all grades of cardboard are becoming more expensive, investing in higher quality, durable, and reusable options is the smarter choice. Particularly for businesses looking to optimize costs and ensure the safe delivery of their goods. By making informed decisions now, businesses can navigate these challenging times more effectively, safeguarding their operations and contributing to a more sustainable future.
Our ethos has always been quality first and foremost. Our prices are a true reflection of our products. There are many suppliers in the market who value profit margins over sustainability. With quality, comes reusability, and as the old saying goes, buy cheap – buy twice!
