Meet Our New Box Calculator

“How many boxes will I need to move house?”

It sounds like one of the simplest questions involved in moving home.

It isn’t.

Ask someone who has never moved house professionally how many boxes are needed for a three-bedroom home and you could receive almost any answer imaginable.

Twenty boxes? Forty? Eighty?

The problem is that the number of bedrooms tells only a small part of the story.

A three-bedroom house occupied by two people who moved in two years ago and regularly clear out their belongings can be completely different from a three-bedroom family home that has accumulated twelve years of clothes, books, toys, kitchenware, Christmas decorations, tools and everything hidden in the attic.

Yet both are still described as a “three-bedroom house”.

That is the problem we wanted to solve.

professional moving boxes

Introducing the Moving Supplies Box Calculator

We have launched our new Moving Box Calculator, designed to take much of the guesswork out of planning a house move.

Instead of simply telling someone that a two-bedroom house needs X boxes and a four-bedroom house needs Y, the calculator looks more closely at the home you are actually moving from.

You can begin with a typical property — from a studio or one-bedroom apartment right through to a five-bedroom-plus house — and then adjust the individual rooms and circumstances to better reflect your own home.

The estimate changes as you do.

The objective is simple:

Make it easier to work out what you need before you start packing.

Why estimating moving boxes is surprisingly difficult

People who work in removals develop an instinct for packing volume.

Walk into a house and an experienced mover can start forming a fairly good idea of what will be required.

Most people moving home don’t have that experience.

Why would they?

You might only move house a handful of times during your life.

That makes questions such as these surprisingly difficult to answer:

  • How many moving boxes will I need?
  • What size boxes should I buy?
  • How much packing paper will I use?
  • How many rolls of tape will I need?
  • Should I buy boxes individually or buy a moving kit?
  • Do mattresses and sofas need protective covers?
  • Does putting some belongings into storage change how I should pack?

And getting the estimate wrong creates problems at both ends.

Order far too little and you run out of boxes halfway through packing, usually when time is already becoming tight.

Order far too much and you have spent money on packing materials you may never use.

The sweet spot is not an exact mathematical number. It is a realistic working estimate.

That distinction became very important when we developed the calculator.

A four-bedroom house isn’t always a four-bedroom house

One of the most important questions our calculator asks is effectively:

How much stuff is actually in your home?

Because household size and household contents are not the same thing.

Someone who has recently had a major clear-out may require considerably less packing material than someone living in an identical property with full cupboards, packed wardrobes and an attic that hasn’t been cleared in years.

Our calculator therefore allows users to indicate whether they have relatively little, an average household quantity, or whether the property is particularly full.

It also considers other factors such as how long you have lived in the property and whether children live at home.

Those details matter.

Anyone with young children will understand how quickly toys, clothes, books, equipment and all the other paraphernalia of family life can accumulate.

The longer we live somewhere, the easier it is for belongings to accumulate too.

A simple bedroom count can’t properly capture any of that.

Turning moving experience into useful technology

This is where we believe technology can genuinely improve the moving process.

Moving Supplies & Packaging is backed by removal and storage experience dating back to 1978.

That experience gives us something valuable: knowledge of how people actually move.

Technology gives us an opportunity to make more of that knowledge available to everyone.

Rather than keeping practical moving knowledge confined to conversations between customers and professional movers, we can increasingly turn it into tools that customers can use themselves — at any time, from their phone, laptop or tablet.

The Box Calculator is part of that approach.

And increasingly, AI gives businesses like ours another tool to work with.

We can use modern technology and AI alongside our own experience to help examine different moving scenarios, identify patterns, interrogate assumptions, learn from customer feedback and continually improve the information and digital tools we provide.

But there is an important distinction.

AI should support experience — not pretend to replace it.

Moving house is messy.

Real homes don’t fit neatly into databases.

There is no algorithm that can see the cupboard under your stairs, the shed you forgot about or the boxes of Christmas decorations hidden at the back of your attic.

That’s why we don’t want our calculator to produce a number and pretend it is infallible.

We want it to produce something far more useful:

an informed starting point.

Couple packing Moving Supplies cardboard boxes in a bright room

Your rooms are only the beginning

The calculator allows you to build an estimate around the actual rooms in your property and then adjust the calculation around your circumstances.

It can take account of bedrooms, bathrooms, living spaces, dining areas, utility rooms, attics and other parts of the home.

Users can also indicate whether protective products such as mattress bags and sofa covers should be included and whether some belongings are destined for storage.

That last point matters more than many people realise.

Packing for storage is different from packing for a move

If a box is being packed, transported and unpacked the same day, its job may only last a few hours.

Storage is different.

Boxes may remain stacked for months.

Items need better protection from dust. Mattresses and upholstered furniture should be properly covered. Boxes need to be packed and stacked intelligently so that excessive weight isn’t placed on weaker items underneath.

Our calculator therefore recognises when some of the move is going into storage rather than treating every move identically.

That is exactly the kind of practical difference that simplistic “boxes per bedroom” calculations can miss.

It doesn’t just count boxes

Another thing we wanted to avoid was solving only half the problem.

Knowing you need a certain number of boxes is useful.

But anyone who has packed an entire house knows boxes are only part of the job.

You also need tape.

Packing paper.

Protection.

Possibly mattress bags and furniture covers.

And then there is another question:

What is the most sensible way to buy everything?

Our calculator is designed to estimate the broader packing requirement and compare the different ways we sell those materials so customers can see whether a moving kit, bundle or another combination makes more sense for their particular move.

That means the technology isn’t simply designed to sell people more packaging.

The goal is to help people buy more intelligently.

There is another surprisingly human detail built into the calculation

Rooms share boxes.

That sounds obvious when somebody says it, but it is often ignored by basic online box calculators.

Real packing doesn’t happen like this:

Kitchen: exactly 12 boxes.

Bedroom: exactly 8 boxes.

Bathroom: exactly 2 boxes.

Done.

In reality, you reach the end of the kitchen with half a box of space remaining, so something from the utility room goes into it.

A spare bedroom takes some items from the landing.

The last few objects from one room end up with something from another.

Our calculator allows for this type of overlap rather than simply adding every theoretical room total together.

It is a small detail.

But moving houses are full of small details.

And good technology should reflect reality rather than force reality to fit the technology.

Technology should make moving simpler

There is a temptation when businesses talk about AI and technology to make everything sound complicated.

We want the opposite.

The customer shouldn’t have to care how sophisticated the technology behind a service becomes.

They should simply notice that something which used to be difficult has become easier.

Instead of searching online for:

“How many boxes do I need for a three-bedroom house?”

then reading five different answers…

then trying to calculate how many medium and large boxes that means…

then estimating tape…

then remembering the mattress bags…

then wondering if a moving kit would actually be cheaper…

we want one simple process to do as much of that work as possible.

That is the standard we are working towards.

And the calculator will continue to improve

We are deliberately describing the current Box Calculator as a new tool.

We are still checking its estimates against real moves and real packing experiences, and we actively want customers to tell us when an estimate was too high, too low or simply didn’t reflect their circumstances.

That feedback matters.

Technology gives us the ability to create the tool.

Experience tells us what should go into it.

Customer feedback tells us where it needs to get better.

AI and data analysis can then help us interrogate those results and improve the next version.

That cycle is far more interesting to us than simply launching a calculator and forgetting about it.

Large tall strong boxes
Strong double-wall large moving boxes perfect for packing large items. These boxes are large, strong and perfect for storing or shipping your goods.

So, how many boxes do you need to move house?

The answer is:

It depends on your house, your family and, most importantly, how much you actually own.

That’s precisely why we built the calculator.

If you’re preparing to move home, relocating, downsizing or putting belongings into storage, try the Moving Supplies Box Calculator before ordering your packing materials.

Tell it about the home you’re leaving.

Adjust the rooms.

Tell us roughly how much you’ve accumulated.

Add storage or protection if required.

Then use the result as a practical starting point for your move.

Because moving house will probably never be completely stress-free.

But working out how many boxes you need certainly doesn’t have to make it harder.

Try the Moving Supplies Box Calculator today and take one more piece of guesswork out of your move.

Moving Supplies & Packaging — professional moving knowledge, made simpler.

How Many Moving Boxes Do I Need?

It is the question we are asked more than any other, and it has never had a good answer. “How many boxes do I need?” Ask ten removal firms and you will get ten different rules of thumb. Ask the internet and you will get a number calculated for a four-bedroom house in Texas.

So we built the answer instead. The Moving Box Calculator is now live on our site: tell it about your home, and it works out what your move actually needs, priced in euro, from stock we hold in Cork.

Why guessing costs you money

Getting the number wrong is expensive in both directions, and we see both every week.

  • Under-order and you are packing at eleven at night with the van booked for eight, ringing round for whatever anyone has left. That second order costs more per box, arrives slower, and never quite matches the first.
  • Over-order and you have paid for cardboard you will flatten and put in the recycling. It is money spent on nothing, and it is a waste of good board.

The calculator exists to land you between the two.

Leading the field, not following it

Moving Supplies & Packaging has been supplying moving boxes from Cork for years. In that time the product has changed less than you might think — a well-made double wall box is still a well-made double wall box — but the way people buy has changed completely.

We take the view that an Irish supplier should be setting that pace rather than waiting for someone else to. It sits alongside the other changes we have made this year: automatic bulk discounts that replace fiddly multi-pack listings, honest weight-based delivery pricing, and a once-used box range for customers who would rather buy a box that has already had one life.

How it works

Start with a preset — studio, one-bed apartment, two-bed, three-bed, four-bed, five-bed — or build your home up room by room: kitchen, sitting room, dining room, double and single bedrooms, bathrooms, home office, utility and hot press, attic, garage or shed. Every room type carries its own profile, because a kitchen and an attic fill boxes at completely different rates and in completely different sizes.

Then you tune it to your household with three things that matter more than square footage:

  • How much you are keeping. A move that doubles as a clear-out needs materially fewer boxes than a move where everything comes.
  • How long you have lived there. Ten years in one house accumulates more than two years does. The calculator accounts for it.
  • Children. Toys, clothes and school things add up fast, and they are the single most commonly underestimated part of a family move.

You can also choose new or once-used boxes, add protective materials such as bubble wrap, tape and mattress covers, and tell it if the contents are going into storage rather than straight into a new home — storage changes what you should be packing into and how well it needs to be sealed.

It will show you the cheapest way to buy from us

This is the part we are most pleased with, and it is the part most retailers would have designed differently.

Once the calculator estimates what you need, it prices every route to getting it — buying exactly the boxes on your list, or taking one of our Professional Moving Kits and topping it up — and it recommends whichever comes out cheapest for you. Not the biggest basket. Not the kit that matches your bedroom count. The cheapest.

Sometimes that means it tells you to skip the kit entirely and buy loose boxes. That is fine. If the kit is not the better deal for your particular move, we would rather the tool said so than have you find out afterwards.

Every price it quotes already includes our automatic quantity discounts — 3% from 5 boxes, rising to 9% at 50 — so the total on screen is the total the basket charges. And if your move needs more than 50 of any one box, it will stop and point you at the office for a proper quote, because at that size the delivery deserves a human being rather than a checkout.

It is in beta — and we would like your help

We are being upfront about this: the calculator is in beta.

The model behind it is built on real order history rather than guesswork. But no two households are the same, and there will be moves it reads better than others — a workshop full of tools, a serious book collection, a house that has been in the family for thirty years. We are refining it as real usage comes in.

So please treat the result as a very well-informed starting point rather than gospel. If the number looks wrong for your move, it might be. And if you are in any doubt at all, ring the office on 021 4872405 or email info@movingsupplies.ie. Talking through a move takes about five minutes and we have been doing it since 1978 — no tool replaces that, and this one was never meant to.

If you use it and the recommendation looks off, tell us. That feedback is exactly what the beta is for, and it goes straight to the people who can change the model.

Try it

It takes under a minute, it costs nothing, and there is no obligation to buy anything at the end of it: movingsupplies.ie/moving-box-calculator

We deliver nationwide from our Cork depot, with free local delivery on orders over €75 within Cork City limits, and collection from the depot if that suits you better.

Moving Supplies for Storage

When we consider moving supplies and packaging for storage we really need to think about quality. There are a few options when it comes to storage. Self storage units, traditional moving and storage boxes, and containerised storage to name but a few. Each storage solution may require their own specific moving supplies. For instance, if containerised storage is your preferred option, then you need to think about the elements and changes in temperature within the container.

Typically containerised storage will be at ground level outdoors. Always consider Condensation, dampness, and trapped heat. These are all important elements which require careful consideration.

A self storage unit is typically a unit within a purpose built facility. This may provide peace of mind with regards to temperature changes. But you need to think about the location of the building. Is it near water? Will my goods be stored below ground level? Is the storage facility temperature controlled? In this post we will aim to provide you with detailed insight and the best methods of preparing your goods for storage.

Self Storage

Self storage is a fantastic solution for storing your goods and offering you easy access to your goods. Sometimes you will find that Self Storage facilities will stock their own range of Moving Supplies. These materials are often of low quality and very over priced for they are. A good quality double walled box should always be stacked underneath any single wall boxes or lighter items when loading the unit.

Any single wall box will often crush under any significant weight which may cause your goods to fall inside the unit over time. One of the dreaded scenarios is closing the door behind you and an avalanche of your goods occurs inside shortly after.

I would highly recommend that protective bags should always be used when storing your mattresses. A thick plastic is the best option as the cheaper bags will tear and pierce as you lift them. We provide extra strength mattress protectors that will provide fantastic protection no matter how long you store your belongings. This is also the case with sofas. Sealing the bags with a good quality tape is also a good idea.

This prevents any moisture, insects or unwanted pests from attacking your furniture whilst in storage. If you wanted to be extra careful then you can always layer the floor with old cardboard before loading. This creates a barrier of direct contact between your goods and the floor.

If you have a piece of furniture that you feel needs particular attention then you should pad wrap it. Our American style moving pads combined with our Shrink wrap make protecting your high end furniture very easy. The constant transfer of air in and out of the facility will ensure your furniture can still breathe without gathering mildew.

Traditional Moving Storage Boxes

Numbered timber storage containers stacked in a storage warehouse

The traditional method of storing goods is the option most preferred by professional moving companies worldwide. This storage solution involves placing a customers goods into specially built storage boxes. You will find with this type of storage that you do not have access to your belongings unless you pay a handling charge to retrieve your items.

When choosing traditional storage like this, again you will need mattress protectors, double wall boxes, quality tape and possibly even some export bubble blankets for artwork or items with fabric. When choosing this storage solution the moving company will usually provide all these materials in the cost of moving.

Wrapped furniture and cartons loaded inside a shipping container

Containerised Storage

Containerised storage is the type of storage you really need to be careful with when prepping your goods. As mentioned above, there are many factors that will change, particularly if you are storing for months rather than weeks. Not only do you need to be careful of damp and moisture, you also need to think about heat and stickiness.

We highly recommend wrapping each item of furniture in our export bubble blankets. This material is excellent for protecting furniture from scratches and marks. Our export bubble is made from gentle non-abrasive woven polypropylene layers. This is a modern alternative to moving blankets and can withstand changes in temperature whilst being shipped internationally or in storage.

The bubble wrap blanket also absorbs excess moisture and protects against dampness. Of course, high quality double wall boxes and quality tape are a must also.

This company, without a doubt, has the best customer service I've ever experienced. First, their boxes are so sturdy - not going to start crushing in the van at all. Then, they called ahead, and delivered on time as promised. (The fellow even asked if I needed anything from the shops on his way. I didn't take him up in the offer, but was touched by his gesture.) Was given a short tutorial on making up the boxes for maximum strength. When I made a second order a few weeks later, they remembered me and went out of their way to make sure they could deliver ASAP. I would use their services and products again in a heartbeat. 10 out of 10, and i don't say that often!

Great range of well-priced products, good communication and prompt delivery. The couch cover and mattress cover were a God-send while getting renovation work done. The roll of cling-wrap was super handy for protecting things like smaller, lighter single mattresses and other items we didn't want to have to move into storage. Would definitely order from Moving Supplies again!

Excellent customer service from Brian. I was in a rush to get some moving supplies and he made sure it arrived on time during the busy Christmas season so I didn't need to make a long journey to collect anything from Cork. Very easy to contact someone from their store as well. They are incredibly friendly and helpful. Highly recommend using their service.

Very satisfied indeed with the efficient, courteous and helpful service from this company. Urgently needed materials and Brian in the office arranged to have them delivered to our home in Dublin the following morning. The courier (Mark) rang us when delivering same; as we were out at the time he took great care to cover the package with plastic that we had left at the ready…thank you, Mark. Efficient, friendly and competitively priced. Well done!
